Q&A with Ana Moura
1. Having recently seen you perform in SF, I wanted to ask you what you prefer: singing in front of a live audience, or recording? or both?
I prefer to sing in front of a live audience. To be in a studio, for me it's a bit more complicated, it's colder, I like to be on stage and see on the audience's faces - their reaction.
2. You seem to like interacting with the audience??? can you say more...
For me, a concert is not made only with the people on stage. The audience makes part of the atmosphere created in that moment. I like to feel them close to me. And fado sometimes its so intense that it's nice to have fun interacting with them.
2. It appears as though you have bridged many styles of singing into Fado, can you talk a bit about that?
I used to sing in a band where we played many styles, pop, rock, soul music etc... music for me it's something that has been part of my life since I remember. I'm interested in music with no stylistic borders.
3. Has your vocal/stylistic study of Fado, limited you in any way?
No, it doesn't limit me, because when I am singing I express myself in order to be able to pass along my soul message.
4. What do you dream of?
I'm always dreaming of very different things. Desiring a global and important achievement for instance, the end of global warming. I can also dream of such a simple thing as a lovely meal cooked by my grandmother.
5. What's the next big step for you?
I prefer not making too many plans. In my career things always happened very naturally. But my next big step is always trying to make the next concert the best concert of my life.
6. You talked about starting to compose -- is this the avenue you wish to pursue?
Yes but it's not an obsession. I will need to prepare my life for that, to have free time and mind set.
7. Collaborations..? if so. with whom?
I intend to. But don't want to talk now about it. Ana Moura is the youngest and most innately talented star to emerge from Portugal’s fado tradition. She matches soul-bearing vocals with old world poise. Moura’s latest stateside release, Leva-me Aos Fados, is a sensual delight that celebrates the fado tradition while carrying it ahead for the next generation.
